What is the best time for trekking in Upper Mustang?
When it comes to choosing the perfect time for trekking in Nepal, particularly during the summer months, Upper Mustang emerges as a compelling option. Situated in the rain shadow of the Annapurnas, this region offers the unique advantage of crystal clear days and dry weather. Remarkably, the summer season in Upper Mustang is relatively serene, allowing you to enjoy the best teahouses and tranquility along the trails. While Spring and Autumn are the most popular periods, there is an intriguing event in May that often entices trekkers: the Tiji Festival.
The Tiji Festival, held in May, presents an incredible opportunity to combine adventure with cultural immersion. This vibrant three-day celebration takes place within the premises of the former king of Mustang's palace. People from far and wide gather in Lo Manthang, the heart of Upper Mustang, to partake in this traditional extravaganza. The festival showcases captivating rituals and dances, offering a glimpse into the region's rich heritage. If you choose to trek during this time, you'll witness a fusion of natural beauty and cultural festivities.
While Summer and Spring are the primary choices for Upper Mustang treks, it's worth noting that winter trekking is also a possibility. However, adequate preparation with suitable gear becomes crucial due to colder temperatures and potential snowfall. Nevertheless, regardless of the season you select, Upper Mustang promises a captivating journey that unveils Nepal's hidden gem.
What permits are required for the Upper Mustang Trek?
The Upper Mustang region, nestled near the Tibetan border, is classified as a Restricted Area due to its proximity to Tibet. As a result, trekking on this extraordinary land requires specific permits. The permit cost for entering this Restricted Area is set at $500 per person for a duration of 10 days, with an additional charge of $50 per day for each day beyond the initial 10 days.
In addition to the RAP, each trekker is required to obtain the Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP) permit, which costs $20. This permit remains valid for the entire duration of your trek, regardless of its length.
It is important to note that undertaking this trek alone is not permitted. A minimum of two trekkers is required, accompanied by an authorized trekking company. This ensures safety, support, and adherence to the regulations in place.
Accommodation on the Upper Mustang Trek
When embarking on the mesmerizing Upper Mustang trek, your accommodation options will vary throughout the journey. In the initial stages of your trip, you can anticipate staying at a decent hotel in Pokhara, serving as a comfortable base before commencing your trekking adventure. However, it's important to set realistic expectations as luxury accommodations are not the norm in Nepal. The focus is on providing a suitable resting place for weary hikers and trekkers.
As you venture deeper into the Upper Mustang region, teahouses become the primary form of accommodation along the trek. These teahouses, run by local Mustang families, offer basic yet comfortable lodging options. The heart of each teahouse features a central communal area, where a large stove provides much-needed warmth and creates a cozy atmosphere. The bedrooms, while unheated, typically consist of two beds equipped with mattresses, pillows, and blankets. It is advisable to bring a sleeping bag, preferably a 3-season one, and a pillowcase for added comfort during your stay.
Throughout the Upper Mustang trek, you'll discover that the true essence of accommodation lies not in luxurious amenities, but in the warm hospitality, tranquil surroundings, and the unique cultural experience that awaits you at each teahouse. Soothe your senses, recharge your energy, and immerse yourself in the serenity of this remarkable region, knowing that a comfortable retreat awaits you at the end of each day's adventure.
